Scope of Work
JS Enterprises Custom Landscaping prepped this Town of Larkspur project by grading and compacting the site to ensure stable wall foundations. We built two lower-tier retaining walls using Allen Block Europa blocks, then stacked 3′ granite landscape boulders for the upper wall and scattered accents throughout the mulch beds. Between terraces, we spread Gorilla Hair mulch as a natural ground cover. Along the public sidewalk, we installed a 1.5″ black granite rock buffer to create a clean, low-maintenance border. Finally, we planted hearty shrubs and Colorado Spruce trees to establish a year-round mountain aesthetic and tie the design into the region’s high-altitude landscape.

Challenges and Solutions
Stabilizing a multi-tiered slope within a public right-of-way demanded precise wall construction. We chose Allen Block Europa for repeatable, level lower walls and matched them with irregular granite boulders above for a seamless transition. Proper drainage behind each wall—using perforated pipe and rock backfill—prevented frost heave and water pressure. The narrow strip by the sidewalk required a maintenance-free solution, so 1.5″ black granite rock created a clean edge that won’t erode. Gorilla Hair mulch between the terraces retains moisture and naturally curbs weeds. Finally, selecting Colorado Spruce and hearty native shrubs guaranteed a resilient, low-upkeep landscape that captures the region’s mountain spirit.
